Many slums in big cities have been there for two or three generations. Families residing there develop their own inter linkages, mutual help, service providers of all sorts, retail shops and so on. Usually when a new slum comes up, it is first outside the city at that time but very soon, as the city grows the slums become a part of the city itself.
Uncontrolled urban growth and internal migration from countryside to the town are the major causes of urban slums. Migrants often arrive at a faster pace than the cities are able to absorb them. The development of infrastructures cannot keep pace, and the new arrivals pile up in settlements made of the flimsiest materials, sometimes without any form of municipal administration or public services.
The growth of slums and squatters in urban areas is even further exacerbated by fast-paced industrialization,lack of developed land for housing, a large influx of rural immigrants to the cities in search of better life and the elevated prices of land beyond the reach of the urban poor.
Lack of infrastructure-Problems In the new mega cities with the uncontrolled urbanization a huge percent of the population is accommodated in slums without houses, hospitals, hostels, roads, no kind of city planning and finally but most importantly no sanitation, drainage system and water treatment.
Increasing number of dirty slums has become the main problem of the town planning how a days. Number of dirty slums are increasing with the growing number of metropolitan cities. According to the official data, it has become clear that in cities almost 14.40 crore people live in slums. 45% of the people in the slums do not have pure drinking water and sanitation system.
In metropolitan cities every fifth person was living in slums area in 2001. The pattern of slums in each city has resulted from its environment, stage of development and characteristics of location.
